This concert is a journey traversing the nature and civilization of Western Europe through the magic of music. Crafted around themes of mysticism and realism, modernity and antiquity, the program features the palatial music of Wagner’s mythical figures, the mystery of the Aranjuez garden evoked by Rodrigo’s guitar concerto, the intoxicating chimes of Madrid’s churches at nightfall resonating in Berio’s arrangement of Boccherini’s music, and the iconic church windows depicted by Respighi’s vivid usage of Gregorian chant – a virtual travel from antiquity to modernity made possible by colorful orchestration and modal harmonies.
